Wyandotte County Nearly Bankrupt
UG Mayor Reardon cuts salaries for Employees, Police and Fire 20%.
Unified Government Mayor Joe Reardon announced 20% across the board cuts to
the proposed budget tonight in Wyandotte County. The unified Government of Wyandotte
County loaned millions to developers and property speculators that have turned
sour.
Recently the County laid off/furloughed every employee for one day a week. The
County banked on Village West the Schlitterbahn water park and the Kansas Speedway
to bail out the budget yet no money was received from the two projects. Recently
the county cancelled all summer programs for youth and have terminated all unnecessary
spending.
County Administrator Dennis Hays recently married his secretary and both employees
received huge salary increases from Mayor Reardon. Firemen and policemen received
pay reductions and other rank and file staff saw increases in their healthcare
costs.
The UG remains one of the poorest counties in the State of Kansas with unemployment
around 14% according to the bureau of labor statistics. Many people have long
warned Mayor Reardon and the UG about increasing borrowing limits. Now the money
must be paid back and apparently the taxpayers will soon foot the bill.
After years of mismanagement the UG is apparently headed for bankruptcy court.
As developers cancel their loan agreements and default on bond payments, Mayor
Reardon and UG politicians must decide who pays the bills that are now due.
Like General motors and wall street investment banks that declared bankruptcy
the news seem inevitable. Should the UG decide to default on all bonds the bankruptcy
listing would include over $1.2 billion in debt.
